Abstract

Beowulf-style clusters are currently dominating the HPC market. These clusters currently make up more than 50% of the HPC market based on the latest IDC market data. This architectural transformation in the HPC market has re-vitalized the market as a whole. The overall market has grown very significantly in the past 2 years. This is counter-intuitive given the rapid fall in average price per system. The lower prices have made supercomputing more easily accessible resulting in a 70% growth in volume that has driven the market growth.

In this talk, we introduce the concept of a virtual cluster. In this approach, the capacity of a cluster can be virtually increased by connecting a grid of under-utilized resources directly to the cluster. This makes the cluster appear larger than its current physical capacity. End-users interactions with the cluster remain unchanged – they interact with the virtual cluster in much the same way as a physical cluster. The grid is transparently connected to the virtual cluster via "adapters". Benchmarks and case studies compare the performance of the virtual cluster with a real cluster. The performance studies show compelling price-performance benefits with virtual clusters.

Speaker Biodata

Dr. Venkat brings 16 years of experience in the computer industry in a unique mix of roles in research, product development and management. He has been with United Devices company since its inception. Prior to becoming CTO, he was Vice President of Engineering and was responsible for building the development team. Under his leadership, the company developed and delivered three generations of grid computing software to the market. The product has been recognized as an industry leader for building enterprise grids at companies like Novartis, GSK, and Johnson & Johnson.

Dr. Venkat holds PhD and MS degrees in Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His graduate research experience centered on processor architecture, performance analysis, compiler technology and the development of parallel programs. He has several patents issued or filed and several under development. In addition, Dr. Venkat has spoken on numerous panels and conferences (including the Global Grid Forum) on grid computing and its applications.

Abstract:
This talk introduces a new robotic smart house, called Intelligent Sweet Home, developed at KAIST in Korea, which is operated with several robotic agents and interposed with cutting-edge technical concepts for independent living of the elderly and people with disabilities. The work focuses on technical solutions for human-friendly assistance in motion/mobility and advanced human-machine interfaces that provide simple control of all assistive robotic systems and home-installed appliances. The smart house concept includes an intelligent bed, intelligent wheelchair, and robotic hoist for effortless transfer of the user between bed and wheelchair.



The design solutions are found to comply relatively well with most of the users’ requirements and suggestions, conducted and collected by a special questionnaire survey of people with disabilities. The smart house responds to the user’s commands as well as to the recognized intentions of the user. Various interfaces, based on hand gestures, voice, body movement, and posture, have been studied and tested. The talk describes the overall system structure and explains the design and functionality of some main system components. Finally, the talk mentions how the health-monitoring part is integrated in the smart home environment.


Biography:
Prof. Z. Zenn Bien received his B.S. degree in electronics engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 1969 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, U.S.A., in 1972 and 1975, respectively. During 1976-1977, he taught as assistant professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Iowa. Then, as of August 1, 1977, Dr. Bien joined Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology as assistant professor and, is now Professor of Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, KAIST. Since 2005, he is also appointed as Chaired Professor (with endowment of Korea Electric Power Corporation). He was a visiting faculty at the University of Iowa during his 1981-1982 sabbatical years and a visiting researcher at CASE Center of Syracuse University, New York, and a visiting professor at Department of Control Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology during 1987-1988 academic years. Since Sept. 1, 2006, he is currently staying in INT, France as a visiting professor.



Prof. Bien has been serving for various professional societies, domestic as well as overseas. He was the founding president of the Korea Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Society during 1990-1995. Dr. Bien also served as the President of the Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea (IEEK) for the year 2001. He was the chairman of Engineering Division of Korea Academy of Science and Technology during 2004 – 2006 and has been the first president of Korea Robotics Society and the president of Intelligent Robot Cluster in Daejeon, Korea. Prof. Bien’s service for KAIST includes 4 years of chairperson for Dept of EE, Dean of Academic Affairs and Dean of College of Engineering. He has been Director of Human-friendly Welfare Robot System Engineering Research Center since 1999.



His international activities include his long term service for the fuzzy community such as the general chair-ship for IFSA World Congress 1993, for FUZZ-IEEE99, respectively, and as President for IFSA during 2003~2005, in particular. He was also the general chair for ICORR 2003. He was appointed as Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE R & A Society for 2005. Currently, he acts as the steering chairperson for IEEE CIS-Korea Chapter. He also has been serving as editorial members for numerous international journals such as Fuzzy Sets and Systems, International Journal of Fuzzy Systems (IJFS), and IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems. He is associate editor for Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making (FODM), JACII, and J. on Applied Science. Prof. Bien is currently Co-Editor-in-chief of International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Mechatronics.




His current research interests include Intelligent Control Theory, Learning and Adapation Methodologies, Fuzzy Logic-based Systems, and Assistive Robotics. Prof. Bien has published more than 377 international journal/proceedings papers, and has authored/coauthored 5 technical books. He has obtained 17 patents registered and 10 pending.

Abstract:
Reverberation in speech is caused by the acoustic multipath effects that exist in rooms. Speech dereverberation (the removal of these multipath effects in speech) has attracted profound interests in the acoustic research community in recent years. It has a wide range of application in consumer products including but not limited to voice recognition, video and tele-conferencing systems and possibly speaker recognition systems. Although algorithms have recently been proposed for speech dereverberation, no algorithm has yet achieved satisfactory performance. One of the popular methods of speech dereverberation is to perform blind system identification follow by channel inversion/ equalization. The adaptive blind channel identification algorithm is a well-established algorithm which employs adaptive filters and an array of microphones to blindly identify room impulses from the received speech signals. In this talk, we give a brief overview of speech dereverberation and we concentrate on the adaptive blind channel identification algorithm by introducing and highlighting challenges associated with this algorithm. We show how these challenges can be addressed and how improvement in performance can be achieved by the proposed new algorithm.

Biography:
Andy Khong is currently a post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Imperial College London. He obtained his B.Eng from the Nanyang Technological University after which he finished his Ph.D. at Imperial College London with the sponsorship of the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). His current research project involves the development and implementation of acoustic array and seismic fusion algorithms for perimeter security systems. His Ph.D. research was mainly on adaptive channel identification with applications to mono- and multi-channel acoustic echo cancellation for hands-free telephony. His other research interests include speech enhancement and dereverberation research for blind channel identification and blind deconvolution algorithms. He was the recipient of the "Best student paper award" in 2005 International Workshop on Acoustic Echo and Noise Control.

Abstract:
In this talk, we provide an overview of some of our recent research results in image and video processing. In particular, we describe research results in three specific areas: Image analysis, image filtering, and image and video compression. Topics discussed under the first category are camera calibration, color image segmentation and image resizing. Topics discussed under the second category are impulse noise removal, color image filtering and contrast enhancement. Finally, topics discussed under the third category are image compression using subband DCT, image compression using perfect reconstruction IIR QMF banks, and rate-distortion analysis of images and videos.

Biography:
Sanjit K. Mitra received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1960 and 1962, respectively, and an Honorary Doctorate of Technology degree from the Tampere University of Technology, Finland in 1987. He has been on the faculty at the University of California since 1967, first at the Davis campus and at the Santa Barbara campus since 1977 as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he served as Chairman of the Department from July 1979 to June 1982. He served IEEE in various capacities including service as the President of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 1986 and as a Member-at-Large of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society from 1996-99. He is currently a member of the editorial boards of three journals. He has published over 600 papers in signal and image processing, twelve books, and holds five patents.

Dr. Mitra is the recipient of the 1973 F.E. Terman Award and the 1985 AT&T Foundation Award of the American Society of Engineering Education, the 1989 Education Award, and the 2000 Mac Van Valkenburg Society Award of the IEEE Circuits & Systems Society, the Distinguished Senior U.S. Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany in 1989, the 1996 Technical Achievement Award and the 2001 Society Award of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, the IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000, the McGraw-Hill/Jacob Millman Award of the IEEE Education Society in 2001, and the 2002 Technical Achievement Award of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP).



He is the co-recipient of the 2000 Blumlein-Browne-Willans Premium of the the Institution of Electrical Engineers (London) and the 2001 IEEE Transactions on Circuits & Systems for Video Technology Best Paper Award. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, an Academician of the Academy of Finland, a member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, a foreign member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a foreign member of the Academy of Engineering of Mexico. Dr. Mitra is a Fellow of the IEEE, AAAS, and SPIE, and a member of EURASIP and ASEE.

Modern environments, indoor as well as outdoor, tend to rely on various forms of interaction between humans and machines, including service robotic systems. Information which users should learn to handle and interact with new machines has been increasing in geometrical progression along with the complexity of machines. To release the burden of the user, there have been used many forms of MMI (Man-Machine Interaction/interface), and the approach of human-friendly MMI is considered essential for users, in particular, for people with disability or the elderly. Human-friendly MMI is a methodology which transplants human communication abilities to machines. One of the most effective MMI methodologies, the soft computing technology can be used which include fuzzy logic, artificial neural net and genetic algorithms. By such technologies, users can communicates with machines as they do with other humans. In this sense, this human-friendly MMI can be one of the most natural and easy-to-use MMI’s. In the talk, some essential elements of fuzzy logic, ANN and GA are reviewed and various examples are demonstrated on how these techniques are used in realizing human-friendly man-machine interaction systems.

Talk One: Recent Results and Open Issues for Digital Video Search and Topic Tracking

Extending search capabilities to digital videos require creative solutions in harnessing some longstanding challenges, such as content analysis, retrieval model, and search interface design. In this talk, I will present some solutions to the challenges and present a list of open issues. In the semantic annotation area, I will describe efforts in large scale multimedia lexicon definition and semantic labeling. I will describe how such indexes may be used in combination with text indexes in multi-modal search. Additionally, I will present work in extending topic clustering and tracking to the video domain using multi-modal features. I will end the talk with a list of exciting open issues in this area.



Talk Two: Passive-Blind Image Forensics

With the ease of digitally altering and forging image content today, there is a critical need in robust and secure technologies for verifying the authenticity of digital images and videos. The field of Image Forensics involves collection and analysis of digital images for extracting evidences to be used for security related investigative purposes, such as criminal investigation, security surveillance, news reporting, intelligence gathering, as well as health care. Conventional approaches to this problem include the use of digital signature (such as trustworthy cameras) and watermarking. Such solutions, though technically appealing, have not gained acceptance due to their dependence of additional infrastructures. To the contrast, Passive-Blind Image Forensics (PBIF) is an emerging paradigm in detecting image authenticity without relying on cooperative sources for inserting watermarks (thus called passive) and without needing additional reference images (thus called blind). In this talk, I will present motivation, problem definitions, and survey of existing approaches and solutions in this emerging field. I will then describe several results we have obtained in image splice detection, computer graphics vs. photograph classification, and performance benchmarking. Finally, I will share views on open issues and future directions.

He was the chairman of Engineering Division of Korea Academy of Science and Technology during 2004 – 2006 and has been the first president of Korea Robotics Society and the president of Intelligent Robot Cluster in Daejeon, Korea. Prof. Bien’s service for KAIST includes 4 years of chairperson for Dep’t of EE, Dean of Academic Affairs and Dean of College of Engineering. He has been Director of Human-friendly Welfare Robot System Engineering Research Center since 1999. His international activities include his long term service for the fuzzy community such as the general chair-ship for IFSA World Congress 1993, for FUZZ-IEEE99, respectively, and as President for IFSA during 2003~2005, in particular. He was also the general chair for ICORR 2003. He was appointed as Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE R & A Society for 2005. Currently, he acts as the steering chairperson for IEEE CIS-Korea Chapter. He also has been serving as editorial members for numerous international journals such as Fuzzy Sets and Systems, International Journal of Fuzzy Systems (IJFS), and IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems. He is associate editor for Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making (FODM), JACII, and J. on Applied Science. Prof. Bien is currently the Co-Editor-in-chief of International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Mechatronics.



His current research interests include Intelligent Control Theory, Learning and Adapation Methodologies, Fuzzy Logic-based Systems, and Assistive Robotics. Prof. Bien has published more than 377 international journal/proceedings papers, and has authored/coauthored 5 technical books. He has obtained 17 patents registered and 10 pending.

"Multi-modal dynamic interaction in an ubiquitous assistive environment"

Dr. Mounir Mokhtari is an Associate Professor at National Institute of Telecommunication (INT) in France. He obtained his Master in physical science from university Val de Marne (Paris) France in 1992, and a Master of Research in networking from INT in 1994. He got his PhD degree in Computer Science from the University Pierre and Marie Curie and INSERM laboratory in 1997. He is the founding head of Handicom Lab (Handicap Engineering and Communication Lab) since 1999 and obtained his Research Habilitation from the University Pierre and Marie Curie, in Computer Sciences, in 2002.



Prof. Mohktari, INT, France

Prof. Mokhtari was the founding Chair of International Conference on Smart Home and Health Telematics (ICOST), he was also the General Chair of International Conference On Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR’01). He is the Co-Editor of International Journal on Welfare Robotics and many books in Assistive Technology. He is leading several European and national projects in the domain.



Mounir Mokhtari's research activity focuses mainly on Human-Machine interaction, rehabilitation robotics and health telematics. He has more than 70 referred papers and several co-authored technical books.

"Middleware and context-awareness for smart spaces"

Middleware and context-awareness are key enabling technologies for future smart spaces. There is a urgent need to design future smart spaces which have the features of self-integration, future-proof, extensibility and adaptability. To tackle the research challenges, we have explored the following three research areas. The first area is the device platform which deals with spontaneous device interaction; the second one is the context platform which deals with user/environment modeling and understanding; the third one is the service platform which provides a unified framework for managing different devices and software functions; Several context-aware applications leveraging our context middleware are presented.



Dr. Daqing Zhang, I2R, Singapore

Dr. Daqing ZHANG is a Principal Investigator of the Interactive Digital Media Department at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) in Singapore, where he leads research in smart spaces and context-aware systems. His research interests include pervasive computing, service-oriented computing, interactive digital media and context-aware systems. He obtained his Ph.D. from University of Rome "La Sapienza", Italy in 1996. Dr. Zhang was the Program Chair and General Chair of International Conference on Smart Homes and Health Telematics (ICOST 2003, 2004 & 2005), he is the Vice Program Chair of UIC 2007 in Hong Kong, China. He served as a TPC Member in numerous International Conferences such as PERCOM, UbiComp, UCS, etc. He has been a regular invited speaker in various international conferences such as OSGi World Congress, Net@Home, pHealth, e/home, etc.

“Context Aware Healthcare in a Smart Hospital Ward”

Agitated behavior is common in people with dementia, and one of the challenges faced by doctors and caregivers is the detailed and continuous monitoring of such people. With the use of modern sensor and networking technology, and system directed observation, objective outcomes may be expected along with significant saving of manpower. In this talk we present a context aware patient data collection system whereby data collection is done on the fly with multiple sensors of different modalities deployed in a hospital ward. The features extracted from each sensor modality are used in data fusion algorithms. We also present an approach for multi-modality data fusion based on Bayesian networks and other approaches.



Dr. Jit Biswas, I2R, Singapore

Dr Jit Biswas is a Senior Scientist in the Computing Division at the A*Star Institute of Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore, where he is the Principal Investigator of Healthcare projects, using Context Aware Systems technology. In the past, Dr. Biswas as been the Principal Investigator of the ONFIG-I (Optical Networking Focus Interest Group) GMPLS project, and is now a co-principal investigator in ONFIG-II and a UWB-Sentient Computing project. His areas of work include Healthcare, Context Awareness, Distributed Computing and Computer Networking and Telecommunications. He has also served as the Secretary of the IEEE P1520.2 and P1520.3 Standardization Projects, on Application Programming Interfaces for Networks. Previously he has worked in the area of Network Management, in collaboration with ITRI (Taiwan) and also provided know-how and expertise for the management of services and networks for the national high-speed network research test-bed in Singapore. Dr Biswas has a bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (India), a Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering, Bombay (India), a Masters degree in Computer Science from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, (USA), and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin, USA.

ABSTRACT:

The Web has changed the way we live, work, and socialize. Rapid development in technology and its applications, however, require fundamental changes in the Web. Current Web is the Web of documents; what is required is to have a parallel and closely connected Web of events, the Event Web, also. Event Web is a natural next step in the evolution of the WWW. Two things are distinct in emerging applications of information systems: they contain vast amount of multimedia (both live and archived) data and attention is moving away from examining isolated silos of data toward more holistic pictures of evolving situations. Current information tools are very good in dealing with entities, objects, and keywords. To address the needs of information management in dynamic multimodal application environments, new concepts and techniques are needed. There are strong and deep conceptual, engineering, computational, and human centered design reasons to consider events as a primary structure for organizing and accessing dynamic multimedia information. We are developing multiple applications using event models to validate our hypothesis that events are effective in capturing multimedia semantics and building efficient systems to deal with multimedia information. In this talk, I will discuss events, their role in organizing information and experiences, developing event-based approaches for information and experience management systems, the EventWeb and its ubiquitous and fundamental role, and emerging role of the EventWeb as a parallel, but connected, structure to the current WWW which is predominantly a DocumentWeb.
Key technology requirements for the EventWeb will be discussed considering multiple application scenarios.


BIODATA:

Ramesh Jain is an entrepreneur, researcher, and educator.
Currently he is the Donald Bren Professor in Information & Computer Sciences at University of California, Irvine. Before this he was a Rhesa "Ray" S Farmer Distinguished Chair and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. Ramesh is a pioneer in multimedia information systems, image databases, machine vision, and intelligent systems. While professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of California, San Diego, he founded and directed artificial intelligence and visual information systems labs. Ramesh was also the founding Editor-in-Chief of IEEE MultiMedia magazine and serves on the editorial boards of several magazines in multimedia, information retrieval and image and vision processing. He has co-authored more than 300 research papers in well-respected journals and conference proceedings. He has co-authored and co-edited several books, including Machine Vision, a textbook used at several universities. He is a Fellow of ACM, IEEE, AAAI, IAPR, and SPIE. He is the Chairman of ACM SIG Multimedia. His current research interests are in experiential computing and its applications. He recently co-founded Seraja. Earlier Ramesh founded three companies, managed them in initial stages, and then turned them over to professional management. Most recently, he was the co-founder, CEO, and CTO of PRAJA inc located in San Diego. PRAJA was acquired by Tibco. Prior to PRAJA, he was the founding CEO and Chairman of Virage, a San Mateo-based company developing systems for media management solutions and visual information management. Virage was a NADAQ listed company before being acquired by Autonomy. He was also the Founder and Chairman of ImageWare Inc, which provided solutions for surface modeling, rapid prototyping, and inspection. ImageWare was acquired by SDRC.
